It’s a story so familiar that the general theme has passed into urban legend, even if the specifics change. A business professional finds him/herself fired as a result of trashing a boss on Facebook, or posting from the ski slopes while allegedly “on sick leave.”

It would be great if any upcoming PR crisis could announce itself at least a few days before erupting. That way there would be plenty of time to plan and prepare. Unfortunately, the reason it’s a PR “crisis” is usually because it’s a largely unforeseen scenario in which PR professionals are put immediately on the defensive.

No one wants to face it, but every builder will—a public relations crisis. “Crisis” may seem like a strong word but it’s typically the PR industry terminology for a situation where a builder’s brand, products or personnel are depicted in an overly harsh light by the media—whether that’s old media such as newspapers and TV, or new media such as Twitter or Facebook.

The biggest innovation of Google+ is its Circles feature. In order to “follow” someone as you might on Twitter or “friend” them as on Facebook, they must go into one of your circles. You start with default circles for Friends, Family, and Followers, but can create any custom circles you like. For example, one circle may be “College Pals,” while another is “Co-Workers.”
